Gratitude and Money; What is the Connection?

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on gratitude and how it influences our relationship with money. Thanksgiving often brings to mind the warmth of family gatherings, the beauty of fall colors, and a focus on appreciating the things we hold dear. I encourage my clients to extend this sense of gratitude into their financial lives as well.

Many of us are familiar with gratitude, but did you know it can actually shape the way we manage and think about money? In my work as a psychotherapist and financial coach, I see families navigate challenges like financial stress, relationship issues, grief, and trauma. I’ve observed that incorporating gratitude into one’s daily life can foster a sense of hope and motivate positive financial choices.

You might be wondering, “How can gratitude impact my finances?” When you start by appreciating what you already have, it cultivates a positive mindset that, over time, shifts how you view and interact with money.

Try this simple exercise: take a few minutes to list everything that your money has enabled you to experience, enjoy, or achieve in your life. Even if you’re not yet where you want to be financially, don’t let that stop you from appreciating what you do have. Think about what is going well in your financial life, however big or small.

There are many scriptures on gratitude and giving thanks in the Bible.
One of my favorites is 1 Thessalonians 5:18- “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Here are a few practical ways to build hope and positivity around money through gratitude:

  1. Keep a gratitude journal where you write about the financial blessings in your life.

  2. Use money-related affirmations as daily reminders of your goals and accomplishments.

  3. Read and meditate on scriptures on gratitude and giving thanks.
